Launched in August 1997, Shanti Bhavan is a world-class boarding school in Edipalli, an impoverished area in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, India that is striving to level the playing field for children of India’s lowest caste, the so-called “Untouchables.” These children and their families, like many in rural India, live on less than 50 cents per day. They are considered less than others, less than human, in some ways.

Shanti Bhavan has evolved from the recognition that the innate abilities of impoverished children are no different from those of their fortunate peers. It is also based on the conviction that the deleterious consequences of extreme want can be overcome if the problems are tackled in the early stages of a child's development. It is further believed that given a chance to dream and aspire and given support through quality education, constant encouragement, and love, these children will realize their full potential and become successful, productive members of society.

Shanti Bhavan aims to develop the children into wholesome, conscientious, compassionate individuals, and possible future leaders of society who are inspirational and role models for others through their actions. We believe that the multiplicative impact of major successes for those who are trained in Shanti Bhavan and their families will be permanent for generations.
